Islamabad | Sep 18, 2018

On 18 September 2018, Karandaaz Women Entrepreneurship Challenge (WEC) 2018’s incoming Cohort from Lahore met Sajid Javid, Home Secretary of the United Kingdom who was visiting Pakistan and Ms. Jonna Reid, Head of UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) in Pakistan. In WEC 2018, six women entrepreneurs have been selected from Lahore while names of other successful businesswomen from other regions of the country will be announced later.
Ms. Shumaila Afsheen, Owner of Sprinkles Café Quetta, a participant of WEC2017 also met the delegation and shared her experiences of the programme with the audience. Speaking about the programme Shumaila said,

I run the Sprinkles Café on Spinay Road, near the city bus station in Quetta and took part in Karandaaz Pakistan’s Women Entrepreneurship Challenge 2017. It was a great learning experience for us all – especially for us coming from the traditional region of Balochistan often left out from mainstream development programs. In our culture women seldom step out unless accompanied by the men of the family. I decided to break this barrier and with my sister, set up a café business.
The Spinney Road area is heavily populated and unemployment is high. I looked for young men in the neighbourhood with experience to employ. Today I have hired four full-time employees and a part-time ice-cream specialist who comes in to handle that aspect of the business. Today, Sprinkles is the café of choice for travellers seeking a place to rest and refresh themselves. Karandaaz helped me realize my dream of growth. I put into practice the principles of business management that I learned in the Karandaaz supported training. I am happy that I am on the right path and I look forward to a bright future for my business and other women entrepreneurs of my province.

Through Karandaaz Women Entrepreneurship Challenge 2018, select women-led businesses that have been operational for 3 years or more and are looking to scale up their business, will receive customised business development support from Karandaaz and will be eligible for investment of up to PKR 20 million. In exceptional cases, Karandaaz may choose to invest a higher amount. Investment decisions will be made by a panel of judges appointed by Karandaaz.
