Position Summary:

Karandaaz Pakistan is seeking a Principal for the Equity team. The incumbent will be responsible for managing the portfolio of the assigned existing investments of KRN in which it holds significant equity participation. As part of the above the incumbent will be responsible for regular interaction with the sponsors of investee companies, participating in the governance of the investee company, ensuring that the business plans and KPIs are being met, highlighting any challenges or opportunities for the attention of the team. In addition to the above the incumbent will also be responsible for originating, structuring and presenting investment thesis to the investment committee.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

New deal origination

  • Lead detailed industry analysis (market size and growth, structure and value chain, competitive landscape etc.) for key target industries
  • Originate, evaluate and execute investment transactions (screening, valuation, structuring, term sheets, negotiations, documentation, value enhancement plan, exit) to invest growth capital in small and mid-size enterprises with potential for profitable growth and sustainable job creation
  • Structure equity and quasi equity investments to invest long-term growth capital in small and mid-size enterprises with potential for profitable growth and sustainable job creation
  • Prepare detailed financial model incorporating potential business cases and scenarios. Calculating the financial impact and attractiveness of the business using multiple valuation models

Portfolio management

  • Monitor, track and report portfolio performance and generate impact reports under supervision of the CIO, manage and lead transaction teams
  • Actively engage with the management of investee companies and monitor the performance against the KPIs
  • Assist and advise CIO in the Board Matters of the investee including reviewing the Board Papers and other strategic matters
  • Collects and interprets data, such as company financial statements, price developments, currency adjustments, and yield fluctuations
  • Prepare Investment Committee documentation
  • Interact with industry thought leaders and conduct research to identify new investment opportunities.
  • Conduct primary research from industry sources
  • Lead or participate in project team
  • Monitor, track and report portfolio performance and generate impact reports
  • Any other task as may be required for delivering the CIC work plan

Education and Experience

  • More than 8 years of experience in a principal investing, impact investing, investment banking, corporate finance, management consulting or M&A group of a recognized multinational corporation or a reputable investment house in Pakistan
  • Experience in originating and executing private equity and/or corporate investment transactions as a principal investor or advisor
  • Strong grounding and prior professional experience in financial valuation, business analysis and governance matters of public companies
  • Experience in analysis, structuring, execution, and post execution monitoring of principal investments, and/or M&A advisory transaction would be strongly preferred
  • Professional exposure of working in Pakistan
  • Self-starter, motivated to build a high impact equity investment portfolio for small and medium size enterprises in Pakistan
  • Strong command of oral and written English and conversant in Urdu
  • Preferably a masters’ level degree in business, economics, accounting or related discipline from a reputable international or Pakistani institution
  • CFA with strong analytical skills and modelling preferred

  • Strong command of oral and written English and conversant in Urdu
  • Excellent excel skills in general and financial modelling skills in particular
  • Transaction structuring, negotiations and documentation
  • In-depth understanding of corporate reporting and presentation
  • Participation in internal committees will be an added advantage
  • Professional exposure of working in Pakistan
